It’s April Fool’s Day! On this day dedicated to jokes and pranks, let’s take a look at some of the “true stories” that were penned by tricksters, hustlers, and fakes.

You probably remember the drama over A Million Little Pieces by James Frey published in 2005. But the tradition of faking nonfiction goes way back, including Wilhelm Meinhold’s The Amber Witch—the definitive book for avoiding witches—supposedly written by a minister.
