Books To Celebrate LGBTQA+ Pride Month

Amateur: A True Story About What Makes A Man by Thomas Page McBee

The first trans boxer to fight in Madison Square Garden, McBee’s compelling memoir about training for that pivotal experience also explores how our culture views and defines masculinity and violence.

An Unkindness Of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

Solomon’s powerful and enthralling Afro-futurist debut novel imagines a future in which slaves are transported by spaceship. It centers on Aster, a bullied young girl who realizes that the only way out of her brutal situation is to start a revolution.

Don’t Call Us Dead by Danez Smith

This powerful poetry collection by Danez Smith confronts issues of police brutality, racism, being diagnosed HIV positive, and body image.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

Emezi’s debut novel explores identity and mental health through the story of Ada, a Nigerian woman who, due to being born “with one foot on the other side,” develops separate selves within her.

If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo

Russo’s popular YA novel tells the coming-of-age story of Amanda, who moves to a small town in Tennessee after transitioning genders. Needing a new start after attempting suicide, Amanda (who was once known as Andrew) makes new friends, navigates the taut relationship with her father, and begins her first romance as her true self.

She’s Not There: A Life In Two Genders by Jennifer Finney Boylan

The first memoir by a transgender author to land on the New York Times bestseller list, Boylan’s memoir discusses her gender transition as she navigates love, life, family, and self-acceptance. Read our interview with Jennifer Finney Boylan here.
