As Alfred, Lord Tennyson famously wrote, “In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” To help mark the arrival of spring, we’ve put together a list of nine romance plots we here at Writer’s Relief love and secretly—or not so secretly!—wish we could live out. (P.S. They’re not necessarily from romance books.)

1. Rebecca Minton and Dara Thomas from All That Lies Within by Lynn Ames

This romance develops largely through letters and the intimacy of writing. It’s very nuanced and passionate—all in the little details, which is a dream for a writer!

2. Tak O’Leary and Samira Moheb from The Beautiful Land by Alan Averill

It makes our hearts melt that Tak loves Samira so much he is willing to break the very laws of time to save her…despite the very real possibility that he might perish in the process. Their romance is very realistic, hesitant at first, then growing firmer as the story moves forward. In the end they both find their ideal paradise—a place where they can spend eternity in each other’s company.

3. Beauty and Beast from Beauty and the Beast (originally La Belle et la Bête) by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve

This classic fairy-tale romance is love built on the foundation of friendship. Although at first Beauty won’t marry Beast because she dreams of a life with a handsome prince, she comes to value what they have in common—and eventually Beast’s outward appearance no longer matters to her.

4. Jeremy and Sebastian from Fans of the Impossible Life by Kate Scelsa

This romance is turbulent, but it’s very passionate right from the start. Jeremy and Sebastian stick together and support each other through whatever other adversity they’re facing—a nice reminder that life doesn’t have to be perfect for romance to be right.

5. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling

Another example of romantic feelings evolving naturally out of friendship, Ron and Hermione’s love story is certainly full of obstacles! And talk about magic!

6. Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Feisty Beatrice and confirmed bachelor Benedick are attracted to each other, but unwilling to admit it. Their hilarious war of wits and insults entertains, but their eventual surrender to each other is charming. We love this love story between two strong characters who are worldly-wise and not always well-behaved. A perfect match!

7. Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Prejudiced Elizabeth and proud Darcy (or is it the other way around?) truly dislike each other at first—but they gradually abandon their mistaken assumptions and arrogance and are able to assess each other more honestly. The evolution of their relationship into true love based on respect is written in some of the wittiest and most beloved prose in English literature. Love and Pemberley? Yes, please!

8. Pat Peoples and Tiffany Maxwell from The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

The romance between Tiffany and Pat is very inspirational. We love how the story delves honestly into the dynamics between two people suffering from very different forms of mental illness. Despite the odds, they are able to come together and see the best in one another, helping each other heal in their own unique ways.

9. Tristran and Yvaine from Stardust by Neil Gaiman

We adore this story because it shows how love can be magical and take twists and turns that you never anticipated—expect the unexpected and don’t forget to wish upon a star.
