Book Club

Whether you’re a die-hard bibliophile or a casual bookworm, a book club is a great way to meet other readers and introduce yourself to new books and authors. However, the typical “everyone reads the same book” approach can eventually become humdrum and stale. Before you give up on your book club, try adding a dash of the unexpected!

Spice Up Your Book Club By Having Everyone…

1. Choose A Different Book In The Same Genre

In this twist on the book club standard, each member reads a different book of the same genre. This will focus the discussion on a similar set of styles, archetypes, and motifs while keeping the stories fresh and unique.

2. Select Different Books By The Same Author

By having every book club member read a different book, everyone in the group will be able to contribute something unique to the discussion. But by only reading the books of a single author, members can compare the different texts and analyze how the author uses his or her voice to tell different stories.

3. Read A Book Of His/Her Choice

As the saying goes—variety is the spice of life! Allow each member to select any book he or she likes. Each reader will have a unique story to share with the group, and the diversity of subjects and authors should lead to lively conversations about literature, craft, and more.

4. Eat Their Words!

This is a delicious way to add some fun to your meetings! Have each member of your book club bring a snack that is either mentioned in or inspired by the novel you’re reading. For example: a bowl of almonds (Mrs. Dalloway), cakes and tea (Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland), apple pie and ice cream (On the Road), etc. Check our Pinterest Board for more literary-themed edible ideas.

5. Combine Reading And Writing

Not all readers are writers, but everyone may enjoy bringing elements of a writers group into your book club. Challenge each other to write supplemental stories that relate to the book you’re all reading: a ten-page sequel, a character study, or even a character’s backstory.
