Writing Prompt—Rethinking Dialogue

Writing prompt: In the heat of the moment, do you find the right words hard to come by? After an argument or disagreement with your significant other, boss, or parent, do you find yourself going over the conversation but adding the words you should have said? Have you decided that “Yeah…well…you’re wrong!” was perhaps not the best response? Can you rewrite your part of the dialogue? Outline a conversation but add what you would like to have said instead of your less-than-perfect, heat-of-the-moment words. Perhaps you can move some of the negative thoughts and words to a more positive outcome.

Are you holding on to a story, poem, or essay? Not sure what to do with it? Writer’s Relief can help you turn your writing prompt assignments into strong submissions!

I actually have included "re-do’s" of conversations in my writing. It’s a great technique and can really liven up a story. I am of the mind that conversations allow readers to see what is going on rather than be told what is happening. I am a professional emcee/singer in Colorado’s resort areas and I’ve witnessed (and been part of) some of the most interesting (and often stupid, yet amusing) conversations ever to bless the Rockies. Needless to say, I do this a lot.
