June 21 would have been writer Peter K. Hixson’s 65th birthday.
And we at Writer’s Relief are honored to host the third annual Peter K. Hixson Memorial Award for creative writers.
From now through July 12, writers are encouraged to submit their writing. Three winners will receive over $1,800 in Writer’s Relief submission services.
Writers are welcome to apply in the following genres:
- Poetry
- Short prose (stories and personal essays)
- Novels and memoirs
Peter was a talented client of Writer’s Relief who decided to make a difference in the world before he passed away. We feel very blessed to be able to carry on Peter’s legacy of creativity and kindness with this generous award. We are inspired by his example and enduring gifts. We hope you are too.

The Peter K. Hixson Memorial Award is 100% free for all applicants. However, this year, we are welcoming any donations in support of Peter’s vision.
This award was established to help struggling writers. If you, like Peter, would like to support your fellow writers and help ensure that this unique award will stay open for years to come, we encourage you to make a small donation.
- All donations will be dedicated to the Peter K. Hixson Memorial Fund, and 100% of the donations will be used to support creative writers.
- Donations of $1 or more are recommended (absolutely every little bit helps!).
- No preference will be given to writers based on their donation (judges will not know if you donated or what amount you donated).
Writer’s Relief will match donations of up to $5,000 for current and future awards!
