Positively Funny Books To Read For Book Lovers Day | Writer’s Relief

Right now we could all use a good reason to smile! With Book Lovers Day coming up on August 9, the book lovers here at Writer’s Relief decided to make a list of our favorite funny reads. No smartphones, no computers, no TV, no news—take a break, choose a positively funny book to read, then sit back and start grinning.

Funny Books To Read For Book Lovers Day—And Any Day!

Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life by Steve Martin

If you want to laugh, you can’t go wrong with Steve Martin! His memoir recounts his journey to becoming a comedic legend. This funny chronicle offers insights into what inspired Martin and the type of determination he had to develop his craft.

Strange Planet by Nathan W. Pyle

Sometimes it’s nice to kick back and read something out of the ordinary. Strange Planet takes the mundane and presents it through a wacky, otherworldly lens. Pyle’s art is disarming and downright hilarious. If you’re looking for a fun distraction, you should certainly consider checking out this series.

Life Will Be The Death Of Me by Chelsea Handler

When Handler decides she has had enough of the privileged life, she embarks on a journey to make it less so by searching for what really matters. This openly honest and darkly funny memoir might inspire readers to strive for change in their own lives.

The Awkward Thoughts Of W. Kamau Bell by W. Kamau Bell

Bell’s book is a thoughtful and funny read that doesn’t shy away from being awkward. His personal stories and observations about his life are honest and will be refreshing for anyone looking for a unique voice and perspective.

Vacationland: True Stories From Painful Beaches by John Hodgman

Looking for something offbeat? You’ll enjoy Hodgman’s collection of stories. Wildly funny and somewhat strange, these stories are also poignant, sincere, and  touching as he deals with aging, living in Maine, fatherhood, and more.

The Last Black Unicorn by Tiffany Haddish

This sidesplitting, hysterical, and unflinching collection of personal essays explores how Tiffany Haddish learned to survive in one of the poorest South Central Los Angeles neighborhoods by making people laugh. At the very least, she’d be able to use humor to make enough money to get her hair and nails done in hopes of getting a boyfriend! Follow her hilarious journey from stand-up comedian to actress to breakout star.

Bossypants by Tina Fey

If you’re familiar with Tina Fey, you already know you’re in for a humorous treat with this read. Fey’s memoir covers her life from childhood to her career as an actress, comedian, and writer. If you’re unfamiliar with her work, be prepared to laugh as she guides you through the challenges and triumphs she has encountered throughout her career.

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

Lawson’s eccentric childhood had many mortifying moments she wanted to pretend didn’t happen, which she describes in detail in this “mostly true memoir.” Readers will enjoy her hysterically sardonic approach to the dark and disturbing events of life that make us who we are.
