Getting published is tough, but fortunately, Corey Lynn Fayman is tougher. After a few difficult starts and rejections, some writers might have given up, but not Corey! And his “stick-to-it” attitude has paid off: Now he’s an award-winning writer with a full book series and publications in literary journals that include Evening Street Review, Forge, and The MacGuffin.

Read on and watch the video to hear how Writer’s Relief helped Corey get his writing into the hands of the right editors—in one case nabbing an acceptance just twenty-four hours after submission!

In Corey’s Own Words

Fifteen years ago, after following up my career as a musician with one in the tech industry, I felt a need to reengage my creative talents—so I began working on a mystery novel. In my college years at UCLA, I’d majored in creative writing, but I’d never attempted such an ambitious project. It took a few years, but when I finished, I felt happy with the results and was ready to pitch the book. I knew nothing about how to approach an agent or find a publisher. I read a few books on the topic, but the process seemed to take as much time as writing the book itself. It was a lot less fun too. After an encounter with a particularly unscrupulous agent, I threw up my hands and decided to self-publish my first book. Sales were modest, to say the least, but I received some encouraging reviews and committed myself to writing two more books in the series and hoping I might attract an agent or publisher.

Somewhat to my surprise, the plan worked. After I received even better and more widespread reviews for my second self-published novel, the editor of a small but established publishing house contacted me expressing interest in my third book. I crossed my fingers and sent them my latest manuscript. They offered me a contract which included a small advance. The book was published in hardback with a beautifully designed cover. A paperback edition was published six months later. I thought I’d arrived.

Unfortunately, my new publisher wasn’t very good at selling the book. They lost interest in me and declined to publish the next manuscript I sent them. I found myself back at square one. I knew I still wanted to write, but I didn’t see how I’d find the time to market my work. I had a full-time teaching job and an aging parent to look after. That’s when I decided to try Writer’s Relief. They accepted me into the program (which was a nice validation in itself) and we began sending out queries. I was impressed with their process and felt confident I was sending my work to the right people and presenting it in the best light I could.

I didn’t pick up any agents for that fourth book, but I got some good feedback, which allowed me to rewrite and improve it. The process helped me make it a better book, and I eventually found a small publisher who republished and rebranded the whole series. Ballast Point Breakdown has been my best-selling book and recently won the best-in-show Geisel Award at the 2021 San Diego Book Awards.

Novels are a long haul, and I’ve found that writing short stories can be a good way to keep up my skills when I’m working through a tough spot. Previously I hadn’t spent much time trying to market my short work, but with Writer’s Relief it’s become a lot easier. It’s a great feeling when publications accept your work, and having more stories published helps grow my audience, my confidence, and my professional accomplishments.

In short, Writer’s Relief has taken a load off my shoulders and allowed me more creative time to do what I like to do best: Write! Their well-researched and targeted leads have helped me place a wide range of short stories with well-respected publications—one of them within twenty-four hours of submission!
