Wondering how the world’s most revered writers became so successful? While every writer has to find his or her own path to getting published, you might want to try adding these simple changes to your writing routine today!

Six Things Famous Writers Regularly Do—That You Can Do Too

1. Read.

Most well-known writers are avid readers. Stephen King instructs, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

2. Get physical.

Murakami has a strict waking, sleeping, and exercising schedule when he’s actively writing a new book. Vonnegut made sure to perform sit-ups and push-ups during his writing day. Treat your body well, and your body will support the exertions of your mind.

3. Send out many submissions.

Some writers hold on to their work out of fear. Others would LOVE to get their writing to literary agents and lit mag editors, but they just don’t have the time, focus, or energy to do it. As writer and photojournalist Ruth Gruber said, “You should dream, you should have visions. Never let any obstacle stop you.” If you’re not sending out submissions, you’re not giving others an opportunity to notice you.

If you’re unable to make your writing submissions, it may be time to ask for help. Writer’s Relief can come to your rescue. It’s been our job since 1994 to help writers get published by managing their submissions. And we’re good at our job—our clients have included NYT best sellers AND promising newbies. We’re highly recommended and ethical.

To learn more about how we can help you get published, check out our current call for submissions. Our client list is exclusive; you must submit a writing sample before we can invite you to join. About 80 percent of applicants are turned away. We’re currently considering submissions of books (novels and memoirs), stories, essays, and poems. But on April 21, we’ll close our doors to new clients until space opens up again on our list. Click here for our submission guidelines.

4. Block distractions. When you sit down to write, do what the pros do: turn off your cell, hang a “do not disturb” sign on the door, maybe even wear noise-cancelling earplugs (whatever it takes!). Maya Angelou reported keeping a hotel room that had been stripped of all decoration to use while she wrote. Professional writers focus on one thing—writing.

5. Write for your audience. Or, in Khaled Hosseini’s words, “Perhaps most importantly, write for an audience of one—yourself.” These are words that pro writers live by, and you can too. Forget writing for a specific market. Forget writing to impress a teacher, friend, agent, or spouse. Write what you want to read. Write what you love. Authenticity and passion will take you far.

6. Reward yourself. If your idea of being rewarded means tons of fan mail and big royalty checks, keep in mind the words of Anne Lamott: “The act of writing turns out to be its own reward.”
