submissions

Eureka! You’ve created your own version of  the perfect submission strategy! You’ve organized a carefully planned schedule, conducted extensive research, and written your very best work. It’s time to enthusiastically follow your new submission strategy and send your writing out into the world.

But before you know it, your excitement about making submissions starts to fade. Life interrupts with a hundred little things that seem more important. So while you had planned to continue your submission strategy and regularly send out your work—you don’t.

The fact is: The best submission strategy in the world is worthless if you’re not motivated enough to keep sending out your writing. It’s imperative that you stay focused and enthusiastic when it comes time to implement your personal submission strategy.

5 Ways To Stay Motivated And Make Your Submissions:

Reward yourself for success. Set goals for yourself (for example: “I will make six submissions this week”), and then reward yourself when each goal is met. Choose a reward that is something you really want and would not usually allow yourself to have. Otherwise, a reward system will not work.

Seek out others who are in the same boat. Talking with fellow authors about your struggle to stay on track can be a great way to keep yourself motivated. It helps to commiserate and compare notes. And the emotional support you receive will make it easier to focus on your goals. Hint: You can meet other writers at local writing groups, at writing organizations, or on the Web.

Remember—nobody’s perfect! Sooner or later, everyone drops the ball. Don’t beat yourself up or let negativity stop you from moving forward. It may sound corny, but let today be the first day of your new submission strategy!

Don’t procrastinate. Procrastination can trigger a vicious cycle: You put off making submissions—then you feel guilty because you’re not meeting your goal, so you procrastinate some more. If you find yourself wanting to put off until tomorrow what you should be doing today, remember what you’re trying to achieve with your efforts. Focus on the end result, not on the busywork of getting there.

Find your inspiration. Post inspirational quotes by creative writers on your computer monitor or even on your fridge. Read books that will teach you how to make the most of your own willpower. Place a symbolic trophy on your writing desk to remind yourself to keep your eyes on the prize. Finding ways to trigger your positivity will keep your motivation running in high gear.

Make staying motivated the #1 priority of your successful, personal submission strategy.

The most important way to maintain a strong submission strategy is to feel positive and motivated about the work you’re doing.

If you find that researching and preparing your submissions has become overwhelming and that time constraints or feelings of negativity are causing you to fall behind with your work—you might want to consider asking for help. By hiring someone else to do the submission strategy work on your behalf, you can channel all of your energy into writing.
