Writing Exercises Based On Your Zodiac Sign | Writer's Relief

Whether you’re a new writer or a seasoned, published author, creative writing exercises can help develop and hone your writing skills. At Writer’s Relief, we’ve seen firsthand how using writing exercises can improve a writer’s work and even provide some new inspiration. Now the stars have aligned, and we’re bringing you writing exercises straight from the cosmos! If you check your horoscope every day—or even if you consider astrology nothing more than a fun diversion—you can benefit from trying these writing exercises based on your zodiac sign.

Great Writing Exercises For Each Zodiac Sign

Aries: You excel at taking initiative and starting new projects, and you likely have no shortage of energy for starting something new. Pick a letter from the alphabet (not x, q, or z!) and choose a time limit or word count. Without using any words that contain the letter you’ve picked, write until you hit your time or word count.

Taurus: You’re down to earth, and you love consistency and reliability. Your writing challenge is two-fold. First, find a place where you wouldn’t normally write to refresh your scenery and surroundings. Then, take something you’ve already written and flip it to another genre. Try swapping your romance story into a thriller. Or, if you write essays, write a poem based on one of your topics. If you’re a poet, use words, images, and ideas from one of your poems to write a full scene.

Gemini: You’re bright, and your mind moves quickly—so you probably don’t spend too much time staring at a blank page. For this exercise, focus on one emotion, set a timer (you determine what the time limit should be), and start mind-mapping the emotion. How does the emotion feel in the body and in the world? What does it look like and sound like? What images does it conjure in your mind’s eye?

Cancer: You feel things deeply and are quite sentimental, but you may also be a little insecure. To quiet that critical little voice in your head, use timed stream-of-consciousness writing. Set the timer for two or three minutes, and as soon as you start writing, don’t stop until the timer goes off. Even if you find yourself writing gibberish—keep going! As soon as words pop into your head, write them down.

Leo: You’re confident, generous, and pretty dramatic. While drama is an essential tool in the writing world, tools are only useful if you know how to wield them. In this exercise, write a dramatic scene or moment as you normally would—then go back and rewrite it without using any adverbs or adjectives.

Virgo: You’re practical, and you like a certain amount of order and predictability. What you keep forgetting, Virgo, is Hemingway’s mantra: “The only kind of writing is rewriting.” Find an old piece you’ve written and reread it; then write down five things you really like about it. No critiques about what’s not working! Just the positives. Now rewrite the piece from memory, focusing on the five positive elements.

Libra: You prefer balance, and you’re probably exceptional at viewing problems from all sides. You also like things to be perfect—but real life isn’t perfect, and your characters shouldn’t be, either. For your exercise, choose one “hero” and one “villain” from a book, film, or TV show. For each character, spend three minutes listing flaws and three minutes noting strengths. What do you notice about the lists?

Scorpio: You’re emotional, intense, and sometimes impulsive. To linger in your thoughts and ideas, write your draft with pen or pencil on paper, instead of using a keyboard. You might even discover you like doing it this way!

Sagittarius: You are the life of the party, but you can also be overly blunt at times. Practice restraint by diving headfirst into the world of subtext. Write a scene where two characters are discussing one thing on the surface but with a completely different meaning beneath their words.

Capricorn: You’re persistent and like to get things done. Practice letting go of some control, and explore your more creative side! Use a random word generator to get five different words; then write for a set amount of time and include each random word at least once. Feel free to repeat with any number of random words for any length of time.

Aquarius: You are notably creative and unique—fantastic traits for any writer to have! You’re also fairly cerebral and intelligent. Your exercise is this: Pick one small, simple task that a person could complete—sweeping the floor, mowing the lawn, teeing off at golf, etc. Now write a character doing that task—but write it a few different times, each time with a new dominant emotion that the character is experiencing.

Pisces: As the last sign of the zodiac, you embody a little bit of every sign that comes before you. Choose a location where you don’t usually write, and set a timer for three minutes. Take in everything you can about all that’s around you. Ground your observations in the physical by noting things related to all five senses. When time’s up, move to a different spot (where you can’t see the original space) and quickly list out all the details you can remember.
