It can be challenging trying to juggle writing with your other responsibilities: day job, family care, home maintenance, eating, and sleeping (who can sleep when there’s writing to be done?). Too often, your writing time gets pushed aside by other tasks. But at Writer’s Relief, we know that budgeting your writing time—along with a few expert shortcuts, workarounds, and hacks—will help you find more “butt in chair” time for what you really want to do: write!

How To Wrangle More Writing Time In Your Busy Life

Skip the grocery store. In fact, skip as many stores as possible! Who wants to waste precious writing time fighting crowds and standing in line? Nowadays you can buy almost anything online and have it delivered right to your door. That includes meal subscription boxes and even tasty snacks to enjoy while writing.

Multitask. Waiting on hold when you call doctors’ offices, banks, and so forth is one of life’s necessary evils. That’s precious time you can use to write! Put the phone on speaker or use a Bluetooth headset and free-write or jot down ideas. If you prefer to save your writing for a time when you won’t be interrupted, use your “on hold” minutes to finish another task, like answering e-mails.

Get organized. The more organized you are, the less time you’ll waste frantically searching for your keys, or your wallet, or your writing journal. Bonus: Deciding what to ditch and what to keep on your writing desk will ultimately help you do your best work!

Plan ahead—your meals, that is. Instead of spending time each day cooking or packing a lunch, do it all in one fell swoop! Prepping and planning several days’ worth of meals all at once is a huge time-saver.

Keep a to-do list. Listing everything you need to accomplish will help you keep track so nothing falls through the cracks—and what’s more satisfying than checking off each item you’ve completed? Speaking of which…

Use technology. Tech gadgets can be HUGE time-savers, especially when you’re on the go! The Notes app on your phone or computer—or apps like Trello if you want to get fancy—will help you manage your to-do list.

Delegate, delegate, delegate! Do you have family members or friends who are ready and willing (or even sort of willing) to help out? Let them! You may be surprised at how much it can help to get even the smallest task off your plate!

What about all that time you spend researching to find the right markets to send your submissions to—as well as determining which markets aren’t best for your work? This is our most popular writer shortcut: Let Writer’s Relief do all the research work for you! Delegate the research to us, and we’ll pinpoint the best places to submit your work—and you can spend all the extra time you’ll gain writing!

Limit your screen time. Taking an occasional break by channel surfing or scrolling through your newsfeeds can be a good reboot for a busy brain—but it’s also easy to get sucked in and spend hours watching cat videos before you realize hours have gone by and your writing time is over. Set a timer to remind you to keep screen time to a minimum!

Know your best writing time. Are you a morning person? Then maybe get up earlier and use that time for writing before you’re swept up in the day’s tasks. If you’re more of a night owl, maybe stay up later and get some writing done after everyone else is asleep and the house is quiet. Take our handy quiz to learn your best time of day to write!

And Our Top Tip For Getting More Time To Write…

Prioritize! Sometimes you need to push other tasks aside to make space for writing. If writing is important to you, treat it as such. Consistently making time to write should be a top priority if you want to have a successful writing career!

One of the best ways to prioritize your writing career is to submit to the Writer’s Relief Review Board. No one understands the chaotic life of a writer better than we do—and with over twenty-five years of experience, we can help you have more time to write while we boost your odds of getting published.
