Oh no! March 9 is Panic Day. And when you have a writing deadline looming, or you have received another rejection, or you can’t decide on the best cover for your book and time’s running out—the urge to panic may seem irresistible. Relax, take a deep breath, and regain control with these fourteen quotes to keep you moving forward through your busiest, most daunting days. To paraphrase the English war poster… Keep Calm and Write On!

“This, too, shall pass.” — Attar of Nishapur

“What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise.” — Oscar Wilde

“Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires courage.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear?” — Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” — Maya Angelou

“It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness.” — Seneca

“The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.” — Thích Nhất Hạnh

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.” — Mark Twain

“Feelings are something you have; not something you are.” —  Shannon L. Adler

“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end…because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing…this shadow. Even darkness must pass.” — J.R.R. Tolkien, Lord of the Rings

“May the odds be ever in your favor.” — Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

“My dear, in the midst of hate, I found there was, within me, an invincible love. In the midst of tears, I found there was, within me, an invincible smile. In the midst of chaos, I found there was, within me, an invincible calm. I realized, through it all, that…in the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.” — Albert Camus

“Patience is the calm acceptance that things can happen in a different order than the one you have in mind.” — David G. Allen

“Take a walk outside—it will serve you far more than pacing around in your mind.” — Rasheed Ogunlaru

The gift of imagination, so critical to artists and writers, also allows us to imagine the worst scenarios at times, to let our mind’s run away with ideas of defeat, of mediocrity, of insignificance. We can recognize images for what they are, creations, and using our skills, alter our perspectives by creating better images. What if you are actually pretty good and will make the connections necessary as you persist, that will enable you to move on, to reach your dreams, accomplish your goals? Too often we imagine the sky is falling, I think. And I am as guilty of this as anyone.
