Please outen your criticism. This sign may have been written by someone unfamiliar with standard English, but it’s charming. “Outen” is a concise and creative way of saying “put out” the lights. And the “please” and “thank you” show a touching politeness. — I’m a retired English professor who knows all the rules, but I’m also a poet who appreciates beauty of expression.
I think your derision of this note shows a meanness of spirit. Pick on someone your size, my dears. The note was not written for publication, but as a simple request.
