6 December Survival Tricks For Writers

December can be exhausting: holiday parties with family and coworkers, crowded stores and parking lots, a tightening budget—and on top of all of that, you’re (in theory) supposed to be making time to write!

While we can’t promise to relieve all your holiday headaches, Writer’s Relief CAN help you develop a more effective, more efficient way to keep your writing on track and de-stress your hectic December.

Rethink your writing—it’s a reward, not a chore! When life gets busy, it’s important to have the right attitude about your writing—especially when you have a thousand other obligations on your mind. Even though your “butt in chair” writing time might seem like drudgery, remember: The time you spend crafting your prose or poetry isn’t time spent doing “work”; it’s time spent treating yourself to a reward you deserve.

Guard your “do not disturb” time. Your “me” time can become scarce during the holidays, so make sure others respect your writing time—that means no interruptions! And don’t feel guilty about scheduling time to write. Even if it’s just for a few minutes during each day (or each week)—at the end of the month, you’ll feel better knowing you still managed to move your writing forward.

Call in your “elves.” Don’t try to do everything on your own. Ask family members to help wrap gifts; ask the pizzeria to deliver; ask your mother-in-law to babysit. And–maybe best of all–you can ask for help with making your submissions to either lit mags or literary agents. Writer’s Relief can effectively target your writing submissions for you. We do all the research and busywork, so you have more time to write! Give yourself the best gift of the season—time. Send your work to our Review Board today!

Focus on the positive. If you’re tired and miserable, your writing can suffer. Before you become overwhelmed, take a step back and find ways to simplify. For example: when you’re pressed for time, a store-bought pie can taste just as good as one baked from scratch. Stay focused on the positive by remembering the spirit of the season: family and friends; joy and caring. Then, when you’re ready to write, you’ll feel more energized and calm. Learn more about staying positive with our book The Happy Writer.

Make a list and check it twice. Having a plan and being organized is a must for keeping your December days manageable. Making a to-do list will help you put things in perspective: instead of an insurmountable mountain of disorganized responsibilities, you’ll see a step-by-step schedule of doable tasks. Plus, your list can help you focus when you sit down to write—already knowing what you have to do and when means you won’t waste your writing time wondering if you’re supposed to be doing something else instead.

When All Else Fails, Here’s The One December Survival Trick That Will Work

If you’re really feeling pushed to your limit, you may want to step away from your writing goals for this one month. A little bit of a breather will recharge your batteries—and your creativity—for the New Year. Or let Writer’s Relief do these tasks for you…all year long.
