“Getting that first poem published was the hardest threshold to cross. My team at Writer’s Relief kept encouraging me…then came the acceptance! We celebrated…then I continued writing, and Writer’s Relief continued doing the wonderful work they do!”
“Every piece I have sent out with their help has been accepted for publication! I am looking forward to working with the team on getting my new novel out into the world.”
What an amazing loss of talent in 2012! The world is poorer for their having left. I knew that Maurice Sendak had passed, much to the sorrow of several generations of children (now grown up), but I hadn’t known that Jan Berenstein had gone. Despite it’s being often painful, this gallery of pics and quotes was very informative and helpful.
Zig Ziglar, mister motivation, has gone. Sad day for the millions of us whose life this amazing man has touched. This parting quote is so inspirational and so Zig! “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” See you at the Top!
We’ve overlooked Jack Gilbert, a fabulous poet and my first poetry teacher in 1988. He changed the course of my life and I was never able to tell him so. I’m sure there are other luminaries overlooked, but I needed to put Jack in with the wonderful others in your reminder of great givers through writing.
That is a precious memorial slide show. Thanks for offering it here. So many…
The loss of such talent has ripped a hole the writing world; we will be forever scarred.
Beautiful and moving tribute to so much great talent! RIP one and all. Thanks, WR, for giving their memory space here.
God Bless their souls! They enriched us with their talent. Amen
Thank you for honoring these contemporary pioneers of the pen, our precious “Fire Spitter”
Jayne Cortez also transitioned at the end of 2012…She was a integral part of the Black Arts Movement and innovation of the Spoken Word poetry genre:
Rose Solitude
i am essence of Rose Solitude
my cheeks are laced with cognac
my hips sealed with five satin nails
i carry dreams and romance of new fools and old
flames
between the musk of fat
and the side pocket of my mink tongue
– Jayne Cortez
Rest easy fire spittin’ mama.
Isaiah Scheffer, the director of Symphony Space in New York, died late in 2012. He was the director of NPR’s “Selected Shorts,” so he was responsible for bringing readings of many, many short stories to the ears of millions of people. He ran a contest for short story writers, he had great actors reading stories, he had podcasts, he had reading groups, and he did it all with lightness, humor and grace. Symphony Space has a wildly varied performance schedule all year, and Isaiah created it all from a run down old theater that had been turned into a skating rink, I think. He battled real-estate developers for probably 10 years and WON!!! Everyone who writes in this country owes him gratitude and a laugh. Go to Symphony Space’s website, and see what I mean. You’ll love him. Everyone did.
