Featured Client: Betsy Martin

Please help us celebrate our Featured Client, Betsy Martin! Betsy has mastered one of the most difficult skills in poetry (and all of writing, for that matter): creating a vivid, complex experience in a short amount of space. In just a few lines, she can carry us through the decades as she becomes her mother; or whisk us away to the to of a mountain; and even allow us to stare into the eye of a colossal blue whale. More importantly, she never alienates her audience, inviting readers to fully share in her poetic journeys. For this reason, her work has appeared in such prestigious publications as Green Hills Literary Lantern, Sanskrit, and many others.

In Betsy Martin’s Own Words

When I found the ad for Writer’s Relief two and a half years ago in Poets & Writers Magazine, it was a godsend. I had been submitting poetry to literary journals for two years, and with 54 submissions (which seemed like an epic number) had managed to get three poems published. But the process had been laborious―just finding the journals and then following the guidelines for sending the poems―and I was ready to give up. I was happily surprised to be accepted into the Writer’s Relief program.

That opened up a whole new world. The team at Writer’s Relief is warm, supportive, and professional. Just being connected with them helped me feel more a part of the writing community. Now, with eleven poems accepted for publication in this last year or so, I have a much more dynamic sense of being a poet, being a member of the poetry community, and being a part of the history of writers and the written word.

Best of all, my writing has improved under the pressure of the bimonthly submission process. I always had a regular writing schedule, but the new structure has given my work more focus. And with the publication credits has come increased self-confidence. I really couldn’t say enough good things about Writer’s Relief for those who would like to be published writers.

More About Betsy Martin

I have always loved words and literature. I was an English major at Harvard, after which I studied Russian language and literature at Brown and the Middlebury Russian School, living in Moscow for a year. I now work at Skinner House Books in Boston.

I started writing poetry ten years ago after decades of wanting to write; I had been collecting poetic images for years in my head without knowing I was doing it. I couldn’t imagine my life today without poetry.

My poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in The Alembic, Assisi, Barely South, Diverse Voices Quarterly, Front Range Review, Gemini Magazine, Green Hills Literary Lantern, Limestone, Minetta, Pirene’s Fountain, Sanskrit, and others.
